VIA GABINA SITE 10: VILLA

Provisional Summary of G10/84 Pottery

Pottery Report

Via Gabina Site 10, 1984

This report consists of 3 sections.

The first section is the most completely 'digested.' It consists of tables for each area on the site, analyzing and grouping layers by pottery dates.

The following observations can be made:

Area 1 (U,V,W) produced little pottery, but there is evidence of stratification, with layers producing pottery no later than mid 1 A.D., beneath layers dated contemporary with the villa destruction. Republican material also appears as the late date in W 21 and W 23 lowest layers dug.

Area 2 (X18) also shows 2 periods.

Area 3 (BB 23) has much more pottery. Since a similar pattern shows up here, I tried to settle on a closer date for the mid 1 A.D. layers. 50 A.D. is most likely.

In Area 4 (CC 22 / CC 23), the same pattern is repeated. Note one possible 5th c. A.D. shard in surface material.

In Area 5 (CC 16 / CC 17 / CC 18 / CC 19), the pattern is similar, but there may be layers of occupation material of 1/2 A.D. in CC 17 ((3) - (7)) and CC 18 ((5) - (14)). This may be a misinterpretation of the evidence, which however, seems to lack all the pcs I ordinarily associate with early 3 A.D. In CC 16 (2) and D (2), there is a mixture of Republican material (pre-Augustan).

Area 6 (CC 28) dates c. 1 B.C. (cp. Area 10 (EE 27)).

Area 7 (DD 15 / DD 16 / EE 16) again shows 3 stratified dating contexts, although there is really only one pot in DD 15 D (12), and ∴ no great reliance can be placed on this early date. One shard of Forum ware appears in EE 16 North (1).

Area 8 (DD 18) also has one shard of Forum ware and ARS which could be of 3 A.D., but suggests a possibly later date. The late date in DD 18 (13) seems to be mid 1 A.D.

Area 9 (DD 20 / DD 21 / DD 22) includes the excavation of the cuniculus. The greatest concentration of pottery comes this area of the site. Forum ware (2 shards) appear in surface layers here, and there are a few shards of ARS tsc C, probably all from one Form 50 A bowl. This type can be as early as c. 230+ A.D., and continues as late as mid 4. It is probably best to consider these shards as dating c. 240 A.D., and ∴ belonging to the very final days of the Roman villa. There is a good deal of material dating to 1 and especially late 2/early 3 in the cuniculus. The lead glaze pot presents a problem, as I have said. It's form looks too late for 1 A.D. (the late date for Roman lead glaze generally); but the fabric is not objectionable. I will do more research on this type (P7047). There is a reasonable bibliography available, including a recent article by Paul Arthur (!). DD 20 K (5) O26 + O27 seems to be dated to mid-1 A.D., but there is not much evidence on which to judge.

Area 10 material is scant but consistent—down to the year 1 A.D.; no evidence of later material (EE 27). This is perfectly consistent with CC 28 material, which I looked over separately.

The second section are layers from the site grouped together.

The third section is a précis of each layer as I originally studied them, in no particular order.

Sections 2 and 3 may provide more detail on layers which does not appear in Section 1; this is especially useful if my analysis seems unlikely for some reason. In general, as usual, the pottery itself seems to me to present a very clear and consistently unified view of the site.

I am not sure what more specific date I have given to our mid 1 layers before—quite possibly earlier, and that may well be correct, but especially in BB 23, a date c. 50 A.D. is clearly indicated. Of course, the story on floors and stratigraphy here may be somewhat different than such areas we have looked at before. I haven't looked into the brick stamps of 1983 and 1984, which requires library work. It would be good next year to again see if we have bricks with stamps in situ or sited such that their dates could be related to the site. I don't expect anything revolutionary, but it is time next year for another run-through of this evidence.

Immediate observations:

1. By far the most pottery appears in DD 20 007 (cuniculus).

2. 1st ½ 1 is everywhere in second place and generally present.

3. A few shards of Forum ware from 5 A.D.+ appear.

4. A few shards of ESB2 show some end 1/early 2 activity.
